CheckOut: Casa Velas, Puerto Vallarta

casa-velas-puerto-vallarta-mexico-home-top11Our correspondent Aaron Drake checks in with a new Check Out, this time focusing on his latest trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and the romantic Casa Velas.

Top/Bottom line

Casa Velas is ideal for gay honeymooners, those looking for a place to say ‘I do’ (wedding packages are available), or those just looking to get away. If you’re flying solo this trip you may not encounter many other singles — but if it’s rest, relaxation and a refresh from the daily buzz you’re after, you won’t find a better option offering optimal comfort and opportunity for pampering yourself.

From $240 a night. Check the website for special packages and offers.

About 10 minutes just to the south of Puerto Vallarta International Airport, Casa Velas is situated next to the marina, which is where many adventure tours depart from, including zip lining, sailing and a variety of water activities. It’s about 15 minutes to downtown, the boardwalk El Malecón, where you’ll find the bulk of tourists milling about, and the mercado, an open-air market selling handcrafted items, clothing and jewelry. It’s only a few minutes more to the Zona Romantica area, gay beach Los Muertos and popular gay bars La Noche, CC’s Slaughters, Paco’s Ranch, Wet Dreams and Antropologie. Shopping is close by at the shop and restaurant-lined marina or shopping center Galerias Vallarta. Taxis are available and easy to get 24 hours a day; just request one from the concierge.

Now back up and running after Hurricane Odile blasted Mexico’s west coast, Casa Velas welcomes guests to its beautiful all-inclusive, adult-only boutique property. Expect only the best luxury accommodations that you’ll find in Puerto Vallarta, and a top resort in all of Mexico. With gated security — giving additional privacy and peace-of-mind — four floors featuring 80 suites and a long list of amenities at your feet, you can enjoy a relaxing, peaceful atmosphere within a sultry environment that will make this a once-in-a-lifetime destination. Just past the lobby’s fountain and onto the garden terrace, you’ll see the resort’s centerpiece: an inviting deep blue immersion pool, surrounded by Marina Vallarta Golf Club’s rolling greens and lush landscape of tropical plants and palm trees. Throughout the property and in all eight guest room types available you will find traditional Mexican architectural design, décor, artwork, and many fabulous sculptures created by famous contemporary Mexican sculptor Sergio Bustamante.

The brightly colored guest suite types offered are the Master, Master Plus, Grand Class, Grand Class Plus, one- and two-bedroom Ambassador, Governor and Presidential Suites. All offer garden or golf course views with basic amenities and a king-size or two double beds. The Grand Plus Suite has the addition of a dining table for four, indoor and out, and private immersion pools either on the ground-floor garden terrace or second-floor balcony. One-bedroom Ambassador and two-bedroom suites feature the addition of a queen-size sofa bed in the downstairs living room area, a dining table and chairs for four both inside and outside on the private terrace, a balcony and private garden immersion pool. Two-bedroom suites feature a king-size bed and two double beds, each room with a private balcony. One of the best suites at Casa Velas, the Governor Suite is on the top-floor, overlooking the golf course and the resort’s main pool. The living area has a sofa and dining table for two, and an intimate immersion pool right outside. The Presidential Suite is the largest suite at the resort with four bedrooms, two with a king bed and two with double full-sized beds. In the very spacious living room area, guests can enjoy their own full bar and dining table for 10. Just off the living area is a garden terrace with a private immersion pool. Added bonuses for Presidential Suite guests include a complimentary private welcome dinner in-suite, a round of golf and special spa experience.

A full bathroom is standard in each suite type, with Italian marble fixtures, a glass stand-up shower and commode. The plus, Ambassador and two-bedroom suites include a Jacuzzi tub. The two-bedroom suite has two and a half bathrooms, with a regular bathtub in the second bathroom. The Presidential Suite has three and a half baths.

Casa Velas is a full resort with all the amenities you could desire on-property: free wifi, all-inclusive service that includes the in-suite mini bar and snacks restocked daily, cable TV, alarm clock with iPod docking station, down comforter and pillows (with an additional menu of pillow types for the perfect night’s sleep if you wish), spa, gift shop, fitness center offering yoga and fitness classes, lobby bar, beauty salon, 24-hour concierge, and gourmet restaurant Emiliano’s, which serves up a delicious, creative take on Mexican and world cuisine every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel also offers guests the fun option to rent designer handbags and jewelry—and a selection of dress pants is available if you’re in need for formal dining in the hotel restaurant (pants and closed-toe shoes only for men). In addition to Casa Velas, the guests staying at this resort have visiting privileges at the adjoining two resorts: the private Casa Velas Ocean Club, which houses a restaurant serving a lunch menu of Asian cuisine, an infinity-edge pool and Jacuzzi, all overlooking the sandy beach of Banderas Bay; and, for our gay daddies, Velas Vallarta, a family-friendly beachfront resort with many additional amenities, like tennis and basketball courts, nightly entertainment, three restaurants, private beach access and activities, and two swimming pools with a lazy river and swim-up bar. Velas Vallarta guests do not have access to Casa Velas. Complimentary shuttle service to either property can be requested at the front desk — both are about a 5-minute ride. Room service at the resort is available 24 hours.

Gay factor

TAG-approved and perfect for a romantic rendezvous, you’ll likely run into mostly other couples staying at this resort, gay and straight. This all-inclusive resort makes it all too easy to indulge yourself without ever leaving the grounds, but still provides access to all the gay debauchery Puerto Vallarta has to offer if that’s what you’re craving.
