ManAboutWorld Welcomes Bryan Herb, Zoom Vacations!

Bryan Herb, Zoom Travels in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazineVery happy to report that Bryan Herb, Zoom Vacations, has joined ManAboutWorld’s well-traveled band of passionate gay (and lesbian) travel reporters. Herb brings passion, experience and a certain aplomb to the world of gay travel, as reported today in ManAboutWorld.

BRYAN HERB, ZOOM VACATIONS

Bryan Herb is co-founder of Zoom Vacations, which has been providing experiential, luxury gay group travel all over the world for more than a decade. Previously, Bryan was a high school teacher, personal trainer, model, freelance writer, and a hotel marketing and sales manager. He grew up in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, the state’s premier wine country, and with a father who was a wildlife biologist, his childhood was filled with outdoor adventures.

His roots in the outdoors, coupled with his inquisitive mind and his appreciation for health and fitness (as well as for fabulous hotels and resorts) have had a huge impact on Zoom Vacations, and have led him to adventures in every continent but Antarctica. He’s toured the ancient catacombs of Rome, swum with horses where Australia’s rainforest meets the reef, haggled with Hong Kong merchants, walked with wild lions in Africa, danced the Samba in Brazil, and has even studied ecology and group dynamics in a Scottish commune.

In addition to his duties at Zoom Vacations, Bryan also served on the Board of the Directors of the IGLTA for four years, and Chair for two. He was one of nine travel experts featured on the Travel Chanel’s “Vacation Challenge” and was the South America Gay Travel Expert for four episodes on Logo’s Gay Travel show, Bump. In addition, Bryan has hosted gay travel shorts for Comcast, and is the gay travel expert for several gay outlets.

Follow Herb on Facebook or meet him on a Zoom Vacations trip.

La Guardia Needs A New Name!

La Guardia Airport renewed, ManAboutWorld gay travel magazineIt’s about time we renamed La Guardia airport! With the proposed (long-overdue, much-desired) top-to-bottom renovation of La Guardia, the New York Times ponders this question:

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has declared that the $4 billion rebuilding planned at La Guardia Airport in Queens will amount to replacing the airport “in its entirety.”

So is it time, after 76 years, to replace the name, too?

It was the first airport in New York City proper and a marvel at the time of its opening. Today the airport is dated, crowded and inadequate.

Is there any gay iconic name that might make sense? How about Amelia Earhart? Or perhaps Ed Koch? Maybe name it for the grandfather of gay travel, Hanns Ebensten. Or maybe something else. Let us know if you have any ideas in the comments section below.

ManAboutWorld: Six Cool Places To Go

London Sky Garden in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine, six cool places to goEvery month ManAboutWorld delivers a slice of the gay world, including six cool places to go now in our City Seen section. This month hit the road to:

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO

Le Marocain Restaurant (at La Mamounia)
La Mamounia is the most storied hotel in a city full of beautiful properties. It was recently shut down and lovingly and magnificently restored. Part of the experience Le Marocain Restaurant is passing through this storied palace. The restaurant, located in a traditional style riad centered around an inner courtyard, offers both traditional and contemporary cuisine. The salad course consists of a dozen small bowls of locally sourced ingredients (some quite spicy!). The movie-setting mood of the dining area is enhanced by the live traditional music and authentically attired (and handsome) waitstaff.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM

Sky Garden
London’s full of fabulous parks with our favorite ones consisting of the gorgeous trio of green expanses stretching west to east through the middle of the city: Hyde, Green and St. James. But on your next visit, go a little farther east to London’s business district then straight up 525 feet to the Sky Garden at 20 Fenchurch Street, a unique public space spanning three storeys and offering 360-degree views across the City of London. Wander around the beautifully landscaped gardens and an open-air terrace with a full-on view of the famous Shard, and grab a drink, coffee or snack and enjoy London’s highest public garden. Entrance is free though you have to reserve ahead of time via the site. This may sound horrible but on a recent visit there were no more spaces available so we booked as handicapped and got in. 6 Things DJ Grind Says Not to Miss in Portland, Oregon

DJ Grind crushes it, ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine
He will transport you

ManAboutWorld’s contributor, Stephen Massey (aka DJ GRIND) is based in Portland, Oregon. He oversees major communications for non-profit clients. He’s also one hell of a DJ and music producer, DJ’ing at major gay events and music festivals and formulating remixes for a who’s who in music:  Kylie Minogue, and Ariana Grande, Enrique Iglesias, Demi Lovato, Cher, & more. His boyfriend, Tim Healea, is head baker and owner at Little T American Baker. This DJ knows his way around the stage as well as Portland, Oregon.

DJ Grind told us the 6 things not to miss that’ll make a perfect, gay visit to Portland, Oregon.

1-Outdoor Spot: Portland is well-known for its many bridges, and there’s no better way to see them than from the water. In the summer, Tim and I love boating with our friends along the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, and spending the afternoon sunbathing at one of the many beaches on nearby Sauvie Island or Rooster Rock State Park.

2-Breakfast: My partner, Tim Healea, is one of the country’s best artisan bread bakers. There’s no better place in Portland for breakfast than his bakery, Little T American Baker with a wide selection of hand-made pastries, savory breakfast sandwiches, and fresh-roast espresso drinks. Pick up a loaf of what Sunset Magazine describes as the “best baguette in Portland if not the entire West Coast.”

3-Cocktails: Some of the best cocktails in the city are shaken, stirred and poured at Kask — a “modern saloon” just steps from some of the city’s best dining and nightlife offerings. It’s a great spot for a pre-dinner or pre-theater cocktail or a nightcap.

4-Sunday Funday: Less than 40 minutes from downtown Portland, Oregon’s Willamette Valley offers some of the most beautiful and bountiful wine country in North America, with more than 300 wineries and tasting rooms to explore. The Willamette Valley is also a gateway to Oregon’s stunning Pacific Coast communities like Cannon Beach that make for a perfect weekend getaway.

Screen Shot 2015-07-15 at 1.05.59 PM

5-Hidden Gem: On a warm afternoon, we love taking a picnic to Council Crest Park, the highest point in the city. It’s a quiet oasis high above the city, and it offers striking views of the most famous mountains and volcanoes in the Cascade Range, including Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, and Mt. Jefferson.

6-Hotel: The trendy, gay-friendly Ace Hotel in Portland’s dynamic West End neighborhood offers all the stylish furnishings and quirky amenities (typewriters and turntables in many of the rooms) that you’d expect in the self-proclaimed hipster capital of the U.S. Plus, it’s located in the heart of Portland’s burgeoning cultural, dining and shopping district.

The NomadicBoys Top 10 Favorite Foods in the Philippines

NomadicBoys top 10 favorite foods in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazineOur very own NomadicBoys Nibbled their way around the Philippines, sending back this report on their top 10 favorite foods. You will not believe #2! From our guys:

If you believed half the blogs about the Filipino cuisine, you’d think it was one of the worst places on earth for a foodie. But this is simply not the case!

We found many traditional yummy prizes to enjoy and with the exception of balut, here’s our 10 famous foods (and drinks!) we loved and think everyone must try in the Philippines.

#1 CHICKEN ADOBO: THE FAMOUS FILIPINO DISH

NomadicBoys top 10 favorite foods in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine

Chicken adobo is one of the most famous foods to try in the Philippines, known and loved by everyone.

Adobo means “marinade” in Spanish and this is just that: chicken (or pork) marinated in a mixture of soya sauce and vinegar. Other ingredients are added depending on whose recipe you follow.

Our recipe for chicken adobo has been simplified to enable us to replicate it at home. Another recipe we tried was infused adobo with tea at the excellent restaurant: Station 7Tea8S  in Quezon City with our local friend Dennis.

#2 BALUT: DUCK EMBRYO STREET FOOD SNACK

Now THIS bad boy always raises eyebrows with every foreigner.

Balut is a developing duck embryo boiled and eaten as a snack in the shell and with a splash of vinegar. This is definitely one of the most famous foods to try in the Philippines (and probably the strangest).

Eat up the rest of their discoveries by visiting their blog here.

ManAboutWorld’s Tom Goss Visits Kenosha, Wisconsin

ManAboutWorld’s correspondent Tom Goss hit the road with a visit Kenosha, Wisconsin on Lake Michigan. It looks like the ocean but it’s not. And the water’s cold but the people are warm and the summer is packed with fun events and activities. This may be best for LGBT families but, as always, it’s fun to hear Tom’s take on places around the U.S. Check out his visit to a drive-in restaurant.

Click on the video and watch the entertaining, informative (and cute) Traveling Tom introduces us to a little slice of Americana.
