ManAboutWorld Photos Du Jour: Sardinia’s Stunning Beaches

Sardinia' stunning beaches and more in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine

This past summer, ManAboutWorld correspondent, David Alport visited the Mediterranean island of Sardinia with his boyfriend and a few gay friends. They packed the gay (since there’s not much of a scene there) but they did discover Sardinia’s gorgeous beaches, delicious cuisine and warm hospitality.

  1. Why  Sardinia?

Sardinia rose to the top of my list because my good friend Simone grew up there and offered to host six of us at his family’s home. I was also excited to see a less touristy part of Italy, where we had a better chance of soaking up a real slice of Italian life. Oh, and finally there was the call of Sardinia’s famous turquoise blue sea and spectacular beaches … it was hard to argue with that.

2. Who did you travel with?

I always say that the single most important factor in a travel experience is who you go with. For this trip, I went with my partner Jake and two other couples, both of whom I adore. Needless to say, we had a blast. Because Sardinia is a pretty low-key place, I suggest traveling there with friends rather than solo.

3. What is Sardinia’s the gay community like?

There are gay people everywhere, of course, but Sardinia is not about the gay scene. Costa Smeralda is by far the most international spot, but it doesn’t have much of a gay vibe. Down in Cagliari, the island’s capital and biggest city, there is a vibrant street scene at night, and some bars where gays are more likely to gather. But there are not really any gay bars here. The Sardinians, like most Italians, are a bit more closed about their gayness.

4. What surprised you most about Sardinia?

Sardinia is a very simple island. While boasting many of Italy’s assets — great food, physical beauty, amazing shoreline — its charms are more subtle than the rest of Italy’s. Visiting Sardinia is about slowing down and relaxing. Tourist life is entirely focused on the beach, and if you don’t truly enjoy beach-going, Sardinia is not for you. I was a bit surprised by how provincial the island felt, which was actually a wonderful discovery. The one exception to this is on the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) on the northeast corner of the island, where the richest of the world’s rich bring their yachts and fabulosity. A couple days is all you need here, but if you want to experience the lifestyles of the rich, do put it on your list.Sardinian Beach Scene in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine

5. Favorite moment was…

Every day held the same favorite moment: Arriving on a new beach that was even more spectacular than the one before it. Sardinia will simply floor you with the beauty of its coastline.

6. Best time to go to Sardinia

Summer is when you want to be in Sardinia. May, early June and September are the perfect months because it is a bit cooler, but I personally love a hot day, which it is throughout the peak summer months of July and August.

7. Gay factor

As I mentioned, it’s very low. But you will not feel uncomfortable.

Five NYC Boutique Fitness Studios We Love

Cyc spin class at the Row Hotel NYC, one of the boutique fitness studios in NYC
Cyc spin class at the Row Hotel NYC

A good workout is an crucial aspect of a NYC visit for most gay male travelers. Hotel gyms often suck though. On your next visit, take a high-energy class at one of these great boutique fitness studios. You’ll stay fit, burn (on average) 500 to 1,000 calories and possibly meet your next short-term boyfriend. We visited these 5 in Chelsea/Flatiron (the “fitness district”) and Hell’s Kitchen. Swipe all the way down for handsome local spin instructor (and actor) Jared Poulin’s top tips for visitors preparing for a new fitness class.

Exhale Spa Flatiron/Chelsea
Cost: $37

Premise: Core Fusion Extreme: the fat-blasting, muscle-sculpting, high intensity interval training workout

This is the most intense of all the (very intense) classes we experienced. The fitness studio is divided into five sections with five stations at each section; 25 participants move through each station twice with two sets per station. Do the math. It’s insane. The instructors somehow manage to keep an eagle eye on each participant while coordinating the entire overall class. Bring your own water. Towels provided. Have a friend pick you up after: You may be a bit wobbly.

CYC Fitness at Row NYC

Cost: $28

Premise: High-energy, highly-trained “cycologists,” (instructors), amazing music and lights

Cyc instructors are fit, energetic and attentive. The pulsating music and lighting are coordinated to maximize motivation of cyclists. Mid-way through class participants use weights for upper body. We were spoiled by Flywheel’s technology so the one drawback is not knowing your exact torque and RPMs but you will exit the studio sweaty and happy. Hop upstairs to City Kitchen’s multiple food stalls  for a post-workout calorie binge. Cyc provides clip-in shoes, towels and water bottles.

Flywheel Chelsea

Cost: $34

Premise: Cycling class with precise measurement of effort and displayed real-time results to increase motivation

Flywheel Sports integrates technology in the form of an accurate mechanism describing  torque (resistance) and RPMs (revolutions per minute). An opt-in system allows you to compare your performance to others in the class on an overhead screen, which stimulates a competitive boost. Mid-way through class participants use weights for upper body. Instructors are all well-trained; though we like Jared Poulin’s class. Check his top tips for preparing for a class by swiping to the bottom of this article. Flywheel provides clip-in shoes, towels, water bottles and fruit.Continue reading “Five NYC Boutique Fitness Studios We Love”

Social Gay Travel App Via New York Times

scruff

A recent New York Times article shined a spotlight on the gay app SCRUFF, outing it for being more than just a hook-up app; in fact, it’s a smart, sophisticated travel tool focusing on community building and safety.

“For gay travelers, a GPS-enabled dating app can prove quite useful when away from home,” the article said. “Land in Miami or Madrid, fire up Scruff or Grindr and, voilà, immediately find a bunch of guys in the area who are available for dates or casual hookups. But with its latest update, soon to be released, Scruff is more fully incorporating travel with the introduction of a feature called Scruff Venture.

We’re Going To Taiwan LGBT Pride

Taiwan Pride in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine
Taiwan Pride

The city of Taipei, Taiwan has the largest LGBT pride celebration in Asia. It’s scheduled for next Saturday, October 31. ManAboutWorld has been invited to experience the festival and also see other parts of this very interesting country that is not (yet) popular among US gay travelers. We’ve heard a lot about it already and our Taiwan-born global correspondent Allister Chang wrote about this up-and-coming gay destination for us in November 2012.

We’ve already been promised the world’s best pineapple cake, bubble tea, and foot massages! What else is in store? Visit back here next week and find out. Also be sure to check out our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts for more regular updates. (We will use the hashtag #Taiwan.)

Here’s a map so you know where we are going. China is west of Taiwan; Korea and Japan to the north/northeast; and Philippines to the south.

Buenos Aires Update: Friends of Dorothy Party Rocks!

Friends of Dorothy, Buenos Aires party, ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine
Par-TAY in B-AY!

This just in from ManAboutWorld correspondent Michael Siebert: the hot “Friends of Dorothy Party” in Buenos Aires. Michael cleary gets around. Did you see yesterday’s post? He hops around from continent to continent bringing us updates of the hottest gay events and places on the planet for gay travelers. Check the pic below to see how crowded it gets.

Each month in Buenos Aires there is a gay dance party called “Friends of Dorothy” at Palacio Alsina, an old theater, with tons of space to dance and move around.  Enjoy plenty of seating upstairs when you want to take a break (spend the extra 6 USD for a VIP ticket); however, like most things in BA, everything starts late.  The party starts at midnight, but will not really start until 2-3AM and will go until 7AM.  It is worth planning your trip around this party giving you a chance to mingle with many locals. Please note that the last party of the year is generally in October because the locals will be gone doing other things for the summer. Info here

New ZealandGay Ski Week: Start Planning for Next Year

ManAboutWorld’s Michael Siebert (left)

The largest gay ski event in the southern half of the world sees hundreds of people flock to Queenstown, NZ during the last part of August and early September, every year, for a full week of skiing, drinking, dancing and adventure. The next official DNA Gay Ski Week will happen August 27 to September 3, 2016.  Start making your plans now. Here’s a report by ManAboutWorld correspondent Michael Siebert who is pictured here (on the left in the photo above) with his handsome friend, Joao. They enjoyed Gay Ski Week with hundreds of gay ski and boarding aficionados but also spent a little time exploring Queenstown and surroundings.

Queenstown is an adventure town. Consider skydiving and all the other options available to a fun-seeker.  Days trips to Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound are available; however, I would consider an overnight boat tour so that you are able to see the sound at sunset and sunrise. Exploring the lake area is a lovely option as well.  Another option:  One could rent a car in Christchuch and drive through the lake regions for some spectacular views, but the drive is approximately 6-7 hours from Christchurch to Queenstown.

Ski season in Queenstown is from mid-June to early-October.  If you plan for early October you just must might have the slopes to yourself and it is a perfect time to stay at Pounamu since it is just outside their busy season.

This year, our gracious host, Pounamu Apartments was a an excellent place to call home for a week of skiing and relaxation. The views and comfort, along with the excellent hospitality, you will feel like a local in no time.  Pounamu is short 10-minute walk to the city center; however, you will have the comfort of your own kitchen, fireplace, fantastic views, service and the staff are available to help customize your trip to your liking.  If walking is not your thing, rent a car for your trips to the mountain and surrounding areas; however, walk to the center of town, the traffic will drive you mad and parking can be difficult.

Skiing in Queenstown does require a short bus ride (if you do not have your own car) to any mountain (three to choose from) and the bus stop is just outside the front steps of Pounamu.

Can’t wait till next August? ManAboutWorld will cover gay ski events in the Northern Hemisphere in our next issue. Stay tuned.

Parting Shots: Alaska Bro-cation

The stunning vistas of Alaska, in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazineManAboutWorld photo editor Dillon Davis is was in Alaska this summer on a “bro-cation” and brought back this photo update.

  1. Why Alaska?

I have always wanted to see this great state so when my friend, Greg (pictured above) decided to plan a trip for his 30th birthday I jumped at the opportunity to tag along.

  1. Who is Greg?

My best friend since childhood. During his 20’s he had challenged himself to visit all fifty states before his 30th birthday. With 49 states in tow, Alaska would be the last.

  1. What surprised you most about the state?

With the sun never fully setting and the theatrical sprawl of the landscape, Alaska took on a sort of otherworldliness that I couldn’t possibly have anticipated.Gorgeous landscapes in Alaska, in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine

  1. Favorite moment was…

When hiking in Denali national park on the Mt. Healy Overlook Trail we came across a moose wandering nearby. Before it noticed us and ran off, we stood still and quiet, awestruck by its towering grandeur.

  1. Best time to go to Alaska

I think the best time might be late August when the weather is still on the warmer side, the tourism season hasn’t come to a close, and the Northern lights make an occasional appearance.

  1. Gay factor

From hiking, canoeing, and camping to whitewater rafting or just enjoying a fresh caught salmon, Alaska has many opportunities for male bonding and rugged adventure.
