Gay Cambodia. NomadicBoys. Video. Need We Say More?

We spent 2 weeks travelling in Cambodia in April 2015 with our friends Jess from the UK and Johan from France.

We started in the capital city of Phnom Penh where we discovered a very exciting gay scene with local boy Aaron.

We then headed to Siem Reap to explore the world famous temples of Angkor Wat. In Siem Reap we also saw the excellent Phare Circus and got quite involved in the water and talcum powder throwing during the Khmer New Year celebrations around Pub Street.

We finished our Cambodian travels exploring the beaches around Sihanoukville. Otres Beach was our favourite: peaceful, few people and a great base to take a tour to visit the surrounding islands.

Above is our Cambodia travel video of our 2 weeks discovering this remarkable country.

FREE Gay Travel Guide to West Hollywood

Gay West Hollywood as seen in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazineDid you miss our gay West Hollywood Twitter chat yesterday? It included a link to obtain a free Gay Travel Guide to the little city that’s the beating gay heart of Los Angeles. It’s a mere 2 square miles, a pink dot in LA’s sprawling 500 square miles but it packs a punch beyond what its surface area would suggest.

You’ll find fabulous hotels, scrumptious restaurants, a boozy, exciting array of great gay nightlife options but also outdoor space and art, very cool design (clothing as well as home), and loads of cultural options. You don’t even need a car to get around. (Thank you Uber and Lyft.)

Here’s a link to the Twitter chat, where you can find some truly insider tips from local experts (and some saucy photos! Did we mention the locals are hot?!).

Download the ManAboutWorld on the iTunes App Store or Google Play for tablet or smart phone and get the guide for free. For a free three-month subscription to the magazine, click here.

ManAboutWorld Correspondent Tom Goss Visits Death Valley

ManAboutWorld’s newest correspondent Tom Goss hit the road with a visit to the ominously named Death Valley. It’s not necessarily deadly (be sure to pack water!) but it can be super windy, hot and salty. But it’s also one of the most starkly beautiful spots in the U.S.; it features the lowest point in our country; and you’ll find unique species of fish. Yes, fish in the desert!

Click on the video and watch the entertaining, informative (and cute) Traveling Tom take us through Death Valley and live to tell the tale.

Whitney Museum, Stunning Attraction for Gay Travelers

IMG_4581The new Whitney Museum is a masterpiece. The building is cool in an industrial sort of way with drop-dead views from multiple outdoor spaces and well-placed windows; big open spaces housing some of the world’s greatest modern art; and several places to pick up cute, artsy gifts or have some very good food, wine or coffee.

And it was built over the southernmost entrance of the High Line, elevated park in the heart of the Meatpacking district with its chic boutiques, cool restaurants, hip hotels and animal slaughterhouses! It does’t get better than this. Check it out at your first opportunity, especially to see the current exhibit, TK, which has taken over the entire museum.

Insider tips:IMG_4587

  • Start on the 8th floor and make your way to the 5th. It’s in chronological order.
  • Take the cool Artschwager elevatorsor the stairway, which offers even more cool views.
  • Friday night at 7pm, pay as much (or as little as you like. The line starts forming by 6pm

Gay Vietnam: Discovering Gay Saigon With the NomadicBoys

Gay Vietnam: Quan showing the NomadicBoys the yummy street food of Saigon

This blog post on Gay Vietnam was originally published by the peripateticNomadicBoys on their blog; it’s reproduced in part here. Click here to read the entire blog post on their site.

Vietnam was one of the gay friendlier countries we visited in Asia:

  • it has never had any anti gay laws (unlike the US and UK)
  • on 1st January 2015, the Law on Marriage and Family came into effect, outlawing the ban on gay weddings
  • it held its first (peaceful!) pride parade on 5 August 2012 in Hanoi and has been going strong since
  • This year Viet Pride takes place July 31-August 2 in Hanoi.Info here.

Although we found Vietnam to be a relaxed and tolerant country towards us as gay tourists, Vietnamese society still remains very conservative towards homosexuality. For example, The Law on Marriage and Family only allows gay weddings but doesn’t actually recognise them, and many of the gay guys we met were very careful and secretive about their orientation.

ManAboutWorld’s Points Whisperer: Stay Ahead of Changing Mileage Programs

5254395015_b6387cef5b_z

This occasional column is penned by ManAboutWorld publisher and writer Billy Kolber who’s also a very frequent traveler and one of the world’s experts on maximizing miles and other frequent traveler programs.

Mileage is no longer a proxy for loyalty. We’re hearing about it from our friends at the airlines, in industry publications and the New York Times where a recent article discussed how airlines:

Have become increasingly skilled at ranking fliers by just how elite they are, and at public displays of this customer-importance ranking.

All businesses want to reward the customers who bring them the most revenue. For years, airlines couldn’t measure revenue as easily as mileage. Now that they can, it’s the end of perks for travelers who racked up miles at the lowest cost.

On the bright side, many of those elite privileges, like lounge access, better seats and priority boarding are available for a fee. And paying it will free many travelers from the pressure of maintaining their elite status. And now more than ever, ManAboutWorld’s points whisperer column is serving up essential advice for navigating the loyalty programs.

Daily Dose of Travel Inspiration: Remarkable Rocks, Kangaroo Island, Australia

Remarkable Rocks. Literally
Remarkable Rocks. Literally

Today’s Daily Dose of Travel Inspiration comes to us from our Australia-based correspondent Michael Siebert. The incredibly well named Remarkable Rocks are located in Flinders Chase National Park in the southwest corner of Kangaroo Island, Australia.  An early morning sunrise or sunset is an ideal time to visit, which will help highlight the orange colors in the rocks.
