New Orleans: 3 More Reasons to Visit

Southern Decadence, New Orleans, ManAboutWorld gay travel magazineIf you missed Southern Decadence, which took place in New Orleans over the Labor Day weekend, don’t worry. There are lots more parties and events. But there are three more reasons to put New Orleans on your travel to-do list before the end of the year. (If you’re curious about Decadence, see a photo essay here.)

Halloween LGBT Style
October 29-November 1, 2015
For more than three decades, Halloween in New Orleans has been a huge success and a major part of the city’s LGBT community. Once again this year, the French Quarter’s LGBT scene will be out in full regalia for an extended weekend. With four days of thrilling events, you can join the fun at any time.

Faux Real Festival
November 4-22, 2015
Formerly known as the New Orleans Fringe Festival, Faux/ Real Fest celebrates performing arts for three weeks of entertainment. This year’s theme is “Something New,” and tons of performers are gearing up to showcase their best talent.

Christmas New Orleans style
Visitors to New Orleans during the Holiday Season may want to sample an old Crescent City tradition that dates back to the early 19th century. It is called a Reveillon Dinner and there is the story behind it. In French, New Orleans’ original language, the word “reveillon” means “awakening.” The Creoles, some of the city’s earliest inhabitants, celebrated the start of Christmas in the early 1800s, with a big family meal when they returned home from midnight mass. Click here for more information.

We Visited The Milan Travel Expo

Milan Expo, Italy, as seen in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine

By the time our associate editor Kenny Porpora had touched down in Milan for 2015 Expo, it had already been amazing travelers for more than 3 months. The expo — the quinquennial event, previously in China, and scheduled to be in Dubai come 2020 – was themed this year around food sustainability, with 140 participating countries.

Each country’s pavilion took around 2 years to complete, and each is a marvel of art and culture, capturing the essence of the country, its innovation, its farming, and its vision toward the future.

Get Naked (and Gay!) in the South of France

Phil in the South of France reporting for ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine
Phil in the South of France

Picture and words by ManAboutWorld Global Correspondent Phil Rake reporting from the South of France.

Thinking about your next holiday? If you are fond nature or naturism, then you’ve just found a great escape… Just beyond the medieval village of Montclus (in the south of France) lies the Lotus Tree, a fab gay, clothing-optional guesthouse. Nestled on a hillside with breathtaking views of the Cèze Valley, the grounds are secluded, veiled by the surrounding woodland, grasses and wild flowers. So there is total privacy and you are free to spend your entire day in the nude, sunbathing by the pool or lazing around the beautiful gardens. The Lotus Tree is also one of the most welcoming places you will ever visit. From your arrival you will be made to feel right at home, especially when you are greeted by Jake, the resident Labrador.

Whether you are after a romantic getaway, a new adventure or just a plLotus Tree, France in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazineace to unwind and escape, then The Lotus Tree is just right for you!

For the more active travellers, there are miles and miles of countryside to explore as well the nearby villages of Barjac and Goudargues (both a short drive away). You can also go skinny-dipping in the River Cèze, which is within walking distance from the guesthouse. There is a gay section on the riverbank which is popular with locals and visitors – but it gets very busy in the afternoons so it’s best to arrive a little early in order to secure the best spot.

The Next Must-Visit Gay Getaway: The Balkans

DJ Yabis in Kotor, Montenegro, ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine
DreamEuroTrip’s DJ Yabis in Kotor, Montenegro

We think the Balkans are the next big-time gay getaway! Have you seen an uptick in posts from insider-y gay travel friends in Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia and the other small countries in the Balkan Peninsula. (See the map below.) While you’re planning your own trip, follow along with updates from some of our correspondents traveling there now.

*Our very own Steve Roth is posting photos to Instagram. From Steve:

My friend Steve (yes another Steve!) and I love traveling together. We wanted to do a late-summer trip to Europe but we’ve both traveled pretty extensively throughout the continent. We looked at a map and realized that the Balkans were the one ‘hole’ in our European travels, and so the idea for this trip was born. We soon came up with our itinerary… Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia. Our goals for the trip are to have some adventures, eat some good food and see a corner of Europe that not a lot of Americans experience. I think we’re going to thought place for all three!

*Our gay-tour operator pals at Zoom Vacations are visiting there now. Check out their Facebook feed here. One of our correspondent’s Bryan Herb is a co-owner of Zoom Vacations.

*Another correspondent DJ Yabis has been posting amazing photos to Instagram from Montenegro, Croatia and other places in the Balkans. Check him out  in the photo above in Kotor, Montenegro. DJ is an expert in helping travelers plan and budget for trips to Europe. Check out his company, DreamEuroTrip.

And be sure to follow our editor Ed Salvato’s travels through the Balkans (on this blog, on Instagram and on Facebook) on the Source Events Treasures of Venice and Dalmatian Coast cruise September 12-19.

Gay Ski in Queenstown, New Zealand

Gay ski and board at gay ski week, Queenstown, NZ in ManAboutWorld gay travel magazine
There’s Michael (right) with a friend about to gay ski (or board!)

This pas weekend Gay and Lesbian Winter Pride (gay ski!) in Queenstown, New Zealand; you know, the other “down under.” It’s winter in the Southern Hemisphere so those of us in the Northern Hemisphere can cool down a bit from this late August heat simply by looking at these photos. The event runs through September 5.

Gay ski weeks can be really fun. All these fast-moving outdoorsy athletic guys. The slopes can be a democratizer, too (if you can afford to go, that is), and there’s nothing like après-ski when everyone excitedly shares their highlights of the day, helmet-shaped hair, facial sunburns surrounding otherwise a goggle-shaped white patch of skin. These events often include crazy drag antics. Check out the line up at this event and maybe plan a trip down under next year or in our hemisphere this coming winter.

The photos on this page were submitted by our Australia-based correspondent Michael Siebert. Below is a special one he took during the kick off. In his words:

At 4PM NZ time a rainbow appeared and literally kicked off Gay Ski Week. The timing was spectacular. The photo was taken from the balcony of our lovely hosts, Pounamu Apartments on Frankton Road.

ManAboutWorld magazine, along with  other media outlets, was invited to enjoy a Provincetown dune tour, an experience that Art’s Dune Tours has been providing for almost 70 years. (The original owner’s son now runs the company.) It’s a beautiful, interesting experience as these photos show.  The photo above shows a group of journalists enjoying a clam bake on the beach, lined up to enjoy the setting sun and the seals frolicking in the water.
