#TBT: Temple of Karnak

edegyptBack in 2005, I visited the Temple of Karnak in Egypt. Founded in 3200 BC (how’s that for a throwback?), Karnak is a vast complex of columns, temples and chapels in ruins but surprisingly well-preserved that had been built by more than 30 pharaohs. The great structure remains the second most visited site in Egypt (next to the Pyramids of Giza, of course.) At the time I wrote:

I’ll never forget seeing row upon perfect row of massive columns and thinking, how the heck did the build this in ancient times and how is it still standing today, millennia later. It sounds hokey but plan on watching the very cool light-and-sound show, which really does transport you back thousands of years where you can unleash your inner pharaoh (or Cleopatra!).

Guess Who Included In New York Times Gay Travel Feature

Jason Logan/NY Times

I was quoted in the recent New York Times piece, “For Gay Destinations, Thinking Outside the Obvious.” ManAboutWorld was also included as a resource in the Times piece, “Finding Comfort and Safety as a Gay Traveler.”

Here’s a section quoting me naming the Big Island as one of his favorite off-the-beaten track destinations:

Popular with tourists, Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, and the busy Waikiki area in particular, may be the most obvious choice for L.G.B.T. travelers heading to Hawaii, and it is well worth a trip if you’ve never been. There are plenty of gay bars and gay-friendly businesses, and the 24th annual Honolulu Pride Parade and Celebration is coming up on June 7.
