Bats and Balls: Traveling For Spring Training

Ok, I could get into this.
Ok, I could get into this.

Our correspondent, Paul J. Heney, likes baseball enough to travel for spring training. Hey, he’s a dad! Catch his early ball-game fever.

It sure doesn’t feel like Spring across most of the Northern half of the U.S. But what if you could combine some glorious sunshine and warm temperatures with a close-up look at some well-muscled athletes right about now?

The Cactus League season is wrapping up, but it’s not too late for a last minute getaway. The season runs from February 22 to March 30, and encompasses 15 of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams (the rest train in Florida). All of the ballparks are within a 30 mile drive of downtown Phoenix, making it fairly easy to take in a few games at different ballparks over several days.

My hometown Cleveland Indians share a lovely new ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona with the Cincinnati Reds. Situated about a half-hour west of central Phoenix, Goodyear Ballpark sits in a sun-baked stretch of desert alongside an extensive airplane boneyard (long-term storage for unused aircraft).

A couple of weeks ago, I walked up on game day, paid $5 to park and $23 for one of the best seats in the house. Fourth row, directly behind home plate, with an amazing view of the game action. Not to mention the on-deck batters warming up and stretching a mere 20 feet from me!

Many of the ballparks, including Goodyear, also incorporate a hilly area past the outfield for lounging on the grass or taking a picnic lunch, in case you don’t want to spend 3 hours sitting in a hard plastic seat. The San Francisco Giants’ Scottsdale Stadium proved to be a fantastic little facility, too, even though my game there was marred by rain and hail. (Hail? In Arizona in March? Only I could run into that!)

The Phoenix area has a bevy of amazing resorts and an astounding amount of outdoor recreational activities, so when you grow weary of watching hot guys in tight baseball pants, you do have other options. Although, I did hear that one of the steak joints in Scottsdale was full of baseball players getting their protein on the other night … maybe that calls for a reconnaissance mission.

You’ve Won Round-the-World Airline Tickets, Now What?

Is this guy organized or what?!
Is this guy organized or what?!

Having won First/Business RTW tickets, I was seriously wondering how to possibly use them effectively? For those that are unfamiliar, a RTW airline ticket basically lets you fly a particular alliance around the world with a limited number of stops, governed by routing rules, and at a cut rate from buying individual one way tickets. I won equivalent award miles to book the tickets within the Star Alliance. Unfortunately, their award RTW tickets carry more restrictive rules over paid ones.

Aside from this, both my partner and I being full time working techies with limited vacation had the question of how long we could go for. I could take a 12-week leave of absence on top of vacation. My partner despised his job and was going to quit and get something different after returning. We decided 15 weeks total, leaving 1 week after returning home to “adjust”.  We like major cities and their gay scenes, so 14 weeks of ManAboutWorld’ing, definitely mandates downtime after.

The routing rules I knew of were 6 stops with 1 open jaw (arriving/departing different airports). When booking time came however, I discovered award RTW tickets required saver-award availability, routing across the pacific was simply not available, and either was all first class segments. The clever “family” customer service rep servicing us at the RTW alliance phone desk saved us though, and for similar miles and less restrictions, we booked individual saver awards with carefully selected business and first segments instead of a single first class RTW award.

Focusing on fewer stops and more immersion within our time frame, and easy hopper flights and trains for side trips, as well as the airline routing availability, we came up with the following. We will start in San Francisco, travel westward for easier jet lag, and encompass April through June to follow Spring/Fall.

Argentina: The food is amazing, the nightlife is crazy, and the gay male reputation is hot! We chose 2 weeks in Buenos Aires.

Japan: It’s unique, the gay scene is completely different, and a culture shock for sure. We opted for 1 week in Tokyo.

Australia: We love our Aussiebums and all things down under. We picked Sydney and Melbourne for just under 2 weeks total.

Thailand: It has tasty food, inexpensive luxury, and is The Gay Asian Capital. We wanted Phuket for beach time and Bangkok for partying, 2 weekends total.

Europe: Roam about via train and hopper flights for 6 weeks. (Elaborated in my next posting)

Sweden: Scandinavia for some northern boys, and it might even be warm in June for our 5 nights in Stockholm.

Netherlands: Experiencing Amsterdam for two nights before, It will be a great gay end to the trip for 4 nights.

Winter Party: All Kinds of Beautiful

IMG_5041
Typo?

Winter Party 20, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force‘s celebration of 20 years of partying with a purpose, climaxed with Winter Party Beach Party on Sunday, March 10. And what an explosion of male (and female) pulchritude. What’s arguably the hottest collection of gay men on the planet at that time, Muscle Beach coaxes hot fellows from the entire world but mostly North and South America with the promise of the company of other hot fellows. Though it mostly skews to younger age range (20s-40s), there’s pretty much someone for every taste.

Though the party is over, for those in the Northeast this is a great time to go to Miami with reliably warm and sunny days and pleasantly cooler evenings. ManAboutWorld recently visited Miami. Check out ourJanuary/February issue for our reportage. We also checked out the fantastic hidden-in-plain-sight Betsy Hotel and the Grand Beach Hotel. Stay tuned for write ups about these two properties and other discoveries.

Traveling Gay Dads: Sin-Free Las Vegas

These two dads are about to smooch!
These two dads are about to smooch!

¡Viva el Romance, Viva la familia, y Viva Las Vegas!

“It’s good luck for sweethearts, lovers, or spouses to kiss under this bridge. Go ahead and Happy Anniversary!” our lovely, Greek gondolier at Las Vegas’ Venetian Hotel encouraged. Sean and I were seated across from each other and we blushed, smiled and leaned across for a husband-husband smooch.  When we kissed, Carter and Ammon didn’t blink an eye, and the gondolier sighed. “How lovely, and what lovely children you two have!”

It was Labor Day week of 2012, and it was my 8th Wedding Anniversary Vacation.  Sean, Carter, Ammon, and I were all together, and it has been my favorite anniversary to date. In Las Vegas (just like any city), we lived, loved, and enjoyed ourselves as family.

Winter Party Festival 20 Launches March 6

And this is just a fraction of the crowd.
And this is just a fraction of the crowd.

For those needing a reason beyond weather for visiting Miami, our favorite event is Winter Party Festival, celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2013 from March 6-11, when those sad saps stuck in winter climates are at their wits’ end and ready to party under the hot Florida sun.

This year, the Shelborne Hotel will serve as the pool party host, though all of South Beach is convenient to the large roster of parties and events. All Winter Party proceeds benefit the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and local Miami nonprofit organizations serving the LGBT community. Our favorites: the “Under One Sun Pool Party” on Saturday and the actual Winter Party on the beach on Sunday, both outdoor daytime events so you get to drink and dance in the daylight, surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful men, wearing the least amount of clothing.

Dispatches: Sunset at Bungas Beach, West Sumatra

photo-copy-768x1024As implied in their title, our Global Correspondents are a worldly lot. They send us tips, updates, photos and videos from their travels. Here’s the latest from one of our WomenAboutWorld, Louise Rafkin.

Sunset at Bungus Beach, West Sumatra.  The views are rivaled by the food: spicy, small plates of fish and meat cooked in coconut and spiced to perfection. And not another tourist in sight.
