Departing Shots: Killer Photos Of Cemeteries

La Recoleta Buenos Aires
La Recoleta Buenos Aires

Cemeteries are the subject of the Parting Shots section of this month’s issue of the magazine. Here are a few of our favorite shots. Story and photos by Jeffrey James Keyes

  1.   Why do you check out cemeteries when you travel?

I think some of the most incredible artwork can be found in cemeteries, I love seeing how some are well maintained and others have the feel of a secret garden, like you’ve stumbled into some storybook garden with trees and vines growing over the statues and graves. All cemeteries have the same peaceful vibe, it automatically grounds me and reminds me that life is fleeting. Whenever I leave a cemetery I feel slightly recharged, like I’m ready to live and tackle the world.

  1. Do you travel to places you know will have cemeteries or do you simply check out cemeteries when you find them?

We hope you’re enjoy this long weekend and unofficial kick off to summer. Also be sure to give some thought to the veterans (LGBTQI and S) who’ve served this country.

In a first, LGBT veterans will be honored today with the first such monument in a national cemetery. The dedication takes places today, Monday, May 25 — Memorial Day — 2pm at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois, one hour south of Chicago.

According to the Windy City Times:

The monument, which was spearheaded by Stanley J. Jenczyk, junior board member of the Chicago chapter of the American Veteran’s for Equal Rights ( AVER ), was approved late last year by Ronald E. Yes means yes!

Congratulations, Ireland. Way to lead the world. This is the first time gays have been granted marriage equality through national referendum. (They like us, they really like us.) GAYography brief: Your Global LGBT News Update

ashtonThis column is brought to you by Ashton Giese, ManAboutWorld correspondent and editor of the GAYography newsbrief.

As we approach Memorial weekend (and thus wedding season), the world could not be more gay-married! In two firsts, Ireland will (almost certainly) vote to approve a national referendum on marriage equality tomorrow and Luxembourg’s Prime Minister married his partner! Even in Asia, an Indian mom posted an ad for her gay son and in Taiwan a city implemented it’s first same-sex registry.

Have fun on Fire Island, Rehoboth or in the Pines this weekend (even if it rains you can always stay in and watch Eurovision) and if you’re on the West Coast, don’t forget to celebrate Harvey Milk Day on Friday. Enjoy Pride in Puerto Vallarta as well as Phnom Penh. However, before you head out for the weekend, give to your favorite LGBT cause for Give OUT Day today!
